SOLVENT BLENDING PLANT, HULL

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

DDE acted in capacity as Principal Contractor and Principal Designer for the works which involved the abatement of notifiable and non-notifiable asbestos, dismantling to retained assets, soft strip and remote demolition. DDE were also awarded the remediation contract mid demolition which required the removal of all hard standings, slabs, foundations, treatment of contaminated ground and crushing of all concrete arisings to an agreed specification.

PROJECT CONSTRAINTS:

The works were undertaken within a live manufacturing site operating 24 hours a day. With limited information available, DDE were required to complete a thorough inventory of products used within the process and identify the potential for residual products within the plant. The client’s decommissioning process was limited and as such, prior to commencing any works on site, all accessible tanks, vessels, equipment and pipes were drained to minimize the potential for product spill. Powder products were also in abundance and were abated in advance of the works commencing, with the client maintaining responsibility for disposal. Redundant shared services were also present connecting the old plant to newer facilities. DDE dismantled two pipe bridges to isolate the plant fully. Asbestos was present in both notifiable and non-notifiable forms with the former requiring the construction of significant scaffold enclosures to abate insulating products.

KEY FACTS/ACHIEVEMENTS:

The project was completed on programme and to the client’s satisfaction with no environmental contraventions within the strict operating conditions imposed upon the site or issues in relation to health and safety performance. DDE successfully delivered the project in a live manufacturing facility without any impact on live site operations.

HEALTH & SAFETY PERFORMANCE:

7740 Man-hours worked with zero incidents.
